Futurama - That Darn Katz!

The new season of Futurama has been going on for the past few weeks. I am enjoying them greatly. It did take some time to adjust to the new references. The show moved up ten years, so we are now in 2010. But the jokes have also moved up. So far I have to say my favorite episode is the EyePod one, followed by the Time Machine episode from last week.

The one thing that I have noticed is a pattern of the shows tricking us with their trailers. The episode often times has a much bigger story line than what the trailer shows. So sometimes it seems that where you have seen what is to come, what ends up happening is something completely different. For example the trailer for EyePod was a two heading goat...eating its own vomit. Don't worry I will spare you that clip. The Prop Infinity episode appeared to be a gay pride parade...but it had to do with Robosexuals...just watch it, you will chuckle. The Time Machine episode, though the time machine is what is causing the action to happen, in my opinion, the episode is about Fry's relationship with Leela and his inability to be on time.

Which brings me to last nights episode. It involved the evil cats! They came to our world during the days of the ancient Egyptians to steal our energy and save their planet, but we spoiled and domesticated them. That is until Amy invented a way to create energy from the earth's rotation... antics ensue. Oh and I did mention, apparently, Nibbler is part of the crew now! This is a short clip of the episode, enjoy!

Gen Con Starts Today

Granted I am in California, so no where near able to get out there for this. But I thought I would post about it. Gen Con starts today in Indiana. It is a four day event, which from what I have read sounds like it is run by the fans. For more information visit Gen Con Indy 2010.

Gen Con Indy is the original, longest running, best attended, gaming convention in the world. For over 40 years, Gen Con Indy has been setting the trend and breaking records. Last year, more than 28,000 unique attendees experienced Gen Con Indy. The biggest complaint we hear is that there is simply too much to do, see, and experience. Get lost in a phantasm of art exhibits. Stare at jaw-dropping costumes, or better yet, wear one of your own. Meet the movers and the shakers in the gaming industry. Check out the newest games and get a sneak peek at the latest editions.

And, of course, play your heart out with fellow enthusiasts in a community that understands your passion. What you'll experience at Gen Con Indy is nothing short of IT. You know, whatever "It" is for you? This is IT! Get ready to get there.

Prelude to War...Reasons Bear McCreary Rules!

So, as most people who frequent YouTube know. Many songs are used in videos without permission. Sometimes lawsuits going flying and sometimes they are ignored or taken as a compliment by the artist. But there are times when an artists feels it is time to stand up for the integrity of their work. That brings us to today's post concerning Bear McCreary. For those who may not know his name, he was the composer for Battlestar Galactica. His song "Prelude to War" has often shown in fan videos. But, recently the song has been used by Family Research Council. Bear is not happy! Here is a letter he recently concerning this via Good As You.
Hey everybody...

Thanks for making me aware of this. I just wanted to add my own two cents here, as the composer of "Prelude to War."

First of all, I absolutely hate that my music has ended up being the main title theme for this guy's online hate speech. It seems whoever produced this video was drawn to the strong military themes in the music, and is probably oblivious to the fact that it comes from a series with an open embrace of gays in the military. At least that inherent irony makes me laugh, since they completely missed the mark in that regard.

In the modern internet era, the use of intellectual property has been a subject of constant debate. While I firmly believe that an artist has the right to control where their music ends up, I'm also a realist and recognize that trying to stop anyone from stealing your music and using it somewhere else is like trying to stop a tidal wave with a cork. My music has shown up in dozens of web videos that I'm aware of, which probably means hundreds more I'm not.

I rarely acknowledge when someone illegally uses my music in another medium, even though most of the uses are entertaining works by BSG fans, or independent filmmakers. By logging in here and addressing this person's video, it appears that I'm tacitly endorsing every video online where I DIDN'T log in and say something. This is, of course, not the case. There are plenty of other videos out there with my music illegally used in them. And I'm certain I don't agree with the message of some of them.

However, this video really pisses me off. I have alerted NBC Universal and we are in the process of getting it removed on the grounds of copyright infringement. I can't stand for my work being distorted for use in an out-dated and bigoted message. That is not in the spirit of my compositions nor the series for which they were written.

So Say We All!

-Bear
Here is the song in question for those who may not know it.

JUDGE RULES PROP 8 UNCONSTITUTIONAL

I just received this a little while ago from the NOH8 Campaign. It has to do with the courts overturning Prop 8 today!!!!

After many long months, the landmark Prop 8 Trial has finally come to an end. The NOH8 Campaign has learned that Chief Judge Vaughn R Walker has formally released his ruling in Perry vs. Schwarzenegger, which challenged the constitutionality of Proposition 8. Numerous news sources have confirmed, including CNN, that Judge Walker has ruled Proposition 8 unconstitutional and in violation of the protection clause of the 14th Amendment. Chief Judge Vaughn R Walker's Ruling on the Federal Prop 8 Case via Website

Prop 8 Supporters are expected to file an appeal to the judge's ruling, which would bring the case to the US Supreme Court.

10420_medium

As most of you are already aware, the NOH8 Campaign was inspired by the passage of Proposition 8 back in November of 2008. Everyday supporters have taken a simple grassroots idea that began late one night after an emotional protest and propelled it into something much bigger than we ever imagined. The basic message of "no hate" speaks to so many people, and we've been fortunate enough to receive support from countries all over the world in our short time as an organization. Even though it was inspired by a terrible injustice, the positivity it has brought to our lives is undeniable.

Prop 8 transformed thousands of people into activists that may have never thought about getting involved before, and we were among them. There are so many ways to make your voice heard and to speak out for what you believe in, and we're honored to share our simple method of taking photos to make a difference. Prop 8 has done a lot of damage, but it has also succeeded in uniting the community like never before.

It's important to remember that no matt what the outcome of this trial could have been, every fight for equality brings us that much closer to making it a reality. Win or lose, bringing this issue to the courts and refusing to accept the loss of our rights quietly is progress. Harvey Milk famously fought for the chance to change his neighborhood and lost for many years in a row before his persistence paid off and he won the historic election that made him the first openly gay politician elected to office in the United States. Harvey Milk was one man. Imagine what we could accomplish if we focused all our efforts together.

Today's victory is just a small example of our potential. The community was returned the rights that were unfairly stripped away from them by Prop 8, and that is truly something to appreciate. Though we have a lot to celebrate and be thankful for, it's important to remember that our work is far from over. The NOH8 Campaign will continue to spread its message of equality and anti-discrimination wherever it can, bringing NOH8 to as many states as we can in order to make a change – and we need your help. We're bringing NOH8 to Hawaii for example, planning to help register voters in an environment where civil unions were recently vetoed by the governor so that our supporters can make their voices heard in their local elections this fall.

What we as a community need to do now is what we did when Proposition 8 passed in the first place. We need to keep the issue alive and make ourselves known. We need to band together in a fundamental way that we haven't before. We need to continue to work together to advance our inevitable goal of full equality across the board no matter what.

Join TEAM NOH8 in continuing the fight and celebrating this historic victory TONIGHT @ 6PM in West Hollywood Park. Make sure to wear your white shirts and find a volunteer when you arrive for your NOH8 tattoo. Many of you marched with us at LA Pride, and we need your help tonight to represent everybody still fighting for their rights all over the world.

Thank all of you for your support, and we're looking forward to seeing you at the rally!

The NOH8 Campaign is an official tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Calpernia Addams will be doing a show this weekend up in LA. The tickets include a 4 course gourmet meal, music, and performances but not just Addams but others as well. If you have never heard of her, she was on a show on LOGO title Transsexual Love Story. It was a bachelorette style reality show, where Calpernia was trying to find the love of her life. If you want to go even further back, Calpernia made headlines when her military boyfriend was killed by his fellow soldiers for dating her. Their story was made into a film titled, "Soldier's Girl." Here is a clip of Calpernia giving a glimpse of the upcoming show and the venue.

Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated

A new Scooby Doo series has started on Cartoon Network. The new episodes air on Monday nights, but they are repeated throughout the week. I have to say for the most part I like how they have updated the series. They have moved them into modern day, but returned them back to being teenagers in high school. We get to see them interact with parents, which in itself is hilarious.

Another thing they have done, which as far as I can remember is a first for any of the series, is they have a story arc going on. Now granted, 13 Ghosts of Scooby Doo in theory had that also, but that was more of a premise for why they were hunting ghosts down. With the new series, each episode is its own individual mystery. But there is a bigger mystery about the town they live in (which is no longer Coolsville, it is now Crystal Cove), in which each episode gives them a small clue to it. They are sometimes pointed in the right direction by an unknown character named Mr. E. I already have my suspicions as to who it is...we shall see how it plays out.

Now there is one slight change they have made to the characters which does bother me, and I am sure it bothers many who have made jokes about the hidden details of the characters. Velma and Shaggy are secretly dating. That is right! I said it! Since Zombie Island, Velma has been showing interest in boys, obviously this comes from the series wanting to shy away from everyone suspecting Velma is a lesbian. But this time, they have made her hot for Shaggy...and she wants to shag him!

The voice cast consists of; Grey DeLisle as Daphne, Gary Cole as Fred's Father, Lewis Black as Mr. E, Vivica A. Fox as the Angel Dynamite the DJ, Mindy Cohn as Velma, and Patrick Warburton as the Sheriff.

Frank Welker reprises his role as Fred and Scooby Doo. Casey Kasem is no longer voicing Shaggy (which he hasn't in awhile), but he is playing Shaggy's father. Shaggy is being voiced by Matthew Lillard, whom many may remember played Shaggy in the live action Scooby Doo Films.

The show has had four episodes so far. This clip is from last night's episode about a Man-Crab terrorizing a beach volleyball competition.

Caprica Preview

Here is a trailer for season 1.5 of Caprica... Am I alone with the annoyance of breaking up a season into 1 and 1.5...is it just me or is this marketing thing to make more money from DVDs? Anyways, that is all I am gonna rant about...I do love the show Caprica. I didn't realize they had broken up the season, the first part did feel a bit short, so now it makes sense. I am so looking forward to the new episodes.

Matt Morris - When Everything Breaks Open

Matt Morris recently released a new album titled When Everything Breaks Open. Over the weekend he posted a video of him going to his local Best Buy where they were showing his music video and promoting his album. This of course brought him great joy. Until the next day when he learned about how Target and Best Buy had been contributing to MN Forward, which funds an anti-gay governor candidate. He edited his video to include a message concerning this. So this is sorta of a double post. The first video is his trip to Best Buy, the second video I am posting is his music video for Live Forever off his new album.
